Home Learning Week 4

Here is the poem 'The Town' written by James K Baxter, that we are basing our Memoir writing on this week.
Read the poem and identify:
one structural feature (how the sentences are put together) or
one language feature (verbs, adjectives, nouns) etc.
that is used in this poem.

"The town was usual enough; it had
A creek, a bridge, a beach, a sky
Over it, and even a small tin church
I never went to. My brother, my cousins and I
Did what boys do - dozed in the hot
Schoolroom, made bows and arrows, dodged the mad
Boatbuilder, crept like rabbits through the black
Under-runners with a weak torch,
Burnt dry rushes, wrestled or swam
Doing nothing important"

- James K. Baxter

Getting ready for CAMP!

This Monday is our Ra camp and we are very excited!
We are getting ready by putting together our camp folders that have lots of information in them.

Dean flying fox writing

Imagine you zooming across the line and everything around you is just a blur. You can hear your friends around you screaming, "that was awesome. As you are zooming down you are thinking how you will stop, will you hit the pole? Or will you hit a bump?

Teeshan's Writing!!!

I'm now ready for my biggest challenge.
I can see myself holding the bow and arrow in my hand while my feet are bouncing on the sponge-like grass. I imagine that I'm a hunter trying to kill my prey. Now it's time for my big moment. I place the arrow in the bow. I pull the string back and aim using a single eye. My arms are shaking, legs are stiff then SWOOP!!! The arrow flies through the air faster than the speed of lightning and its pointy tip sinks into the target. "Did I get a bullseye?"
I guess I have to wait and find out. By Teeshan.

James' camp writing

The activities excite every single soul that thinks of them. The high ropes has a lot of people scared to death. But most people think high ropes is going to be the hardest. Walking down a rock face seven metres high doesn't sound that bad. The flying fox sounds the funnest. It looks so long but how do you stop?!! The Burma trail is going to be so scary. We are  doing it at night to scare us even more. Dean and Fletcher's dad are going to scare us. Archery is not going to be scary unlike the Burma trail it should be quite easy and superb. By James.

Imogen's amazing Burma trail writing

My heart is pounding at the thought of the Burma trail. Thinking of the darkness and people hiding waiting for us incessant children to come past. I'm wondering if anyone will scream loud enough to wake the dead.

Arwa's camp writing

I can see the long ropes in my head, I can just imagine myself swing from rope to rope. I can already feel the sweat coming down my body. By Arwa

Alex's wonderful camp writing.

I imagine the flying fox will be very high and it will speed down the zip line like an angry rhino chasing a mouse. The flying fox will be a little bit scary but it will also be lots of fun. By Alex.

Liam's camp writing

The Air rifle is going to be kaboom! kaboom! kaboom! Every minute your ears will pop until
you get so annoyed that you go crazy. By Liam.

Fletch's awesome camp thoughts

My first night in the dorms I will be restless thinking about the next fun day ahead of me but also thinking about the yuck creepy crawlies [except for cockroaches. I'm planning a prank! For the teacher dorms!]Dun dun duuun!!

Mia's camp writing

Thoughts run through my mind about what the high ropes would be like. I imagine large poles the size of small mountains and long ropes like the ones trapeze artists use. I tremble in fear, my heart is pumping, the one activity I'm not excited about. I feel tense inside, since I have a major fear of heights, I don't know what will happen to me, will I fall or will I succeed?
By Mia

Jadon's writing

I can't wait to go mountain biking. I love it so much that I feel like I am going to blow up like a stick of dynamite when it's lit.By Jadon.

Wonderful Writing

Camp thoughts
'I imagine the dorms will be very cold, the roof will have spiders and cobwebs, the walls will be all dented, the floor will be slippery, dirty and cold. I bet that when you sleep the roof will have small cracks and the rain will drip all over you and in the morning you will be all soggy. The dents in the walls will be huge because of all the children. Just think, first a small hit then a middle sized bang and then a big boom and the next thing you know there is a huge dent in the wall. At the middle of the night the ants will come out from under the bed and nibble at your toes.'
By Tayla.

Week 6 Home Learning

Research different activities you might do on a school camp. Think about the objective of each.
Now design your own camp activity that has not been done before. Be creative. Try something really unusual, but keep in mind the purpose. It needs to challenge the children who will be doing it, but not be too difficult or include unrealistic equipment etc.
Write a comment that includes:
The name of your activity
The purpose of it
A summary of how to carry out the activity.
You might like to draw a picture / diagram and put that in your Home Learning book too.

We are Happy!

CAMP

We have used Tagxedo to create a word collage about camp.
We had to input some text that we copied from our blog discussions. The words size show how many times they have been used in our discussion.  If the word has been used lots, then that word will be bigger than others. We could also change the colour, font and shape of the design.
We decided on a bus shape.
What a cool way to publish our Writing and share our ideas!

Have a go at creating your own by clicking here.

Home Learning Week 5

Camp Activities
Choose one of these activities you might be doing on Camp:
Archery
Low Abseiling
High Ropes
Frisbee Golf
BMX
Orienteering
Air Rifles

Research one and write a comment that explains one key thing to remember when taking part in this activity.
For example: 'High Ropes: When you are on the High Ropes it is a good idea not to look down at the ground too much, as that can make it a bit scary. Hold on tight and be brave.'

Camp

What are you looking forward to about Camp and why?
What are you not looking forward to about Camp and why?
What will be your biggest challenge at Camp? Do you think you will overcome this?

Write a comment that includes the answer to all these things.

Home Learning Week 4

This week you need to think about the rights and responsibilities you have at home and at school.
Choose one responsibility you have and give reasons why you think you think this is a good responsibility. Think carefully about this because you need to give reasons.
For example ' I am responsible for keeping my room tidy. This is good because it teaches me to look after my own things. I am Ten now so I need to get better at doing things for myself'.
Then you also need to read someone else's comment and Reply to them, with your opinion on what they have said. Make sure you give a reason.
For example 'I agree with you Jo. I think that being a Librarian is a good way to develop leadership skills'.

Owls Reading Group

Your task this week is to build your vocabulary knowledge. Choose an article, read it carefully and choose two words you are unsure the meaning of. Write a comment that includes the word in the sentence from the book and then find out what it means.

Sentence 'These objects are remnants of the huge dust cloud...'
Remnants means.....

It might take you a while to think about it but that's ok...just have a go! From Miss Dutton.
